When a name is registered in .com, .net, .org, .io and a dozen more, many different people decided it was worth paying for. That is one of the clearest signs of demand for a word, and appraisers use it as a factor when they price the .com. A name that is open almost everywhere has had little interest so far.
- Most taken: a sought-after word. The .com is usually worth more, and buying it means paying an owner.
- Some taken: real interest. Check who holds the .com before you build a brand on another extension.
- Few taken: little competition. You can often register the name in the extension you want today.
How the check works
We look each name up in DNS across 20 extensions at once: .com, .net, .org, .io, .ai, .co, .app, .dev, .me, .xyz, .info, .biz, .so, .tv, .cc, .online, .store, .shop, .site, .tech. A name with name servers or an address is registered. Answers are kept for a few hours. A small number of registered names have no DNS records at all, so before you buy, confirm at a registrar.
